The giant Finn MacCool has built a causeway from Ireland to Scotland boastful that he can win a fight with any giant from that country. His over-confidence rebounds on him, however, when he quails before the sight of an enormous giant known as Red Man crossing towards him. He is only saved from defeat by the actions of his quick-thinking wife who uses a series of ploys to persuade the Red Man that her husband - hiding in the bathtub - is much bigger and fiercer than this Scottish challenger. After his rival has fled, Finn MacCool takes the precaution of tearing up his causeway, just leaving the rocky remnants on the shoreline that we see today. This favourite Irish folk tale is simply told, with enlarged text and comic illustration.
