Based on a true story, this picture book tells how a young girl born into slavery in Tennessee, moves with her family to Liberia in 1830 after her father has been able to purchase their freedom. Martha Ann dreams of thanking Queen Victoria in person for sending British naval vessels to safeguard her new home from slave traders. She fashions a beautiful quilt with a motif of coffee trees and saves for many years until, at the age of 76, she finally travels to England to present her gift to the Queen.
