Abadeha: The Philppine Cinderella This version of Cinderella is set in the Philippines and its illustrations and cultural detail evoke pre-colonial times. Abadeha is mistreated by her step-mother and two step-sisters whilst her father is away on fishing trips. Not content with making her do all the housework, she is increasingly set impossible tasks with cruel intent. But with the aid of the Spirit of the Forest, she receives magical assistance causing her step-mother to devise new punishments. The spirits come to her aid repeatedly and even reward her kind nature with a magic tree laden with treasures. When a Prince takes a ring from this tree, Abadeha's life is transformed, when he vows to marry any woman who can remove the ring which is stuck on his finger. Abadeha, braving the scorn of her step family, succeeds in the task and is chosen as his bride.
