This Native American version of the Cinderella story, from the Ojibwa group, reworks the material of 'The Rough Faced Girl' in a gentler manner. Sootface is smeared with ashes from working day and night for her cruel sisters but her bravery and wisdom lead her to be chosen as bride for the mighty warrior with powers of invisibility. The illustrations incorporate many details of Ojibwa village life and costume.
