Five folktales from early Christian sources, ranging from the Middle East, to Mexico, Ghana and Russia, present cultural variants of the Christmas story. They present alternative versions of a familiar theme in which a very special birth is preceded by portents and magical happenings. The unusual settings are well evoked by the folk-art style illustrations.
