Lina, who lives in a refugee camp on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, has not worn shoes for two years, so is overjoyed to find a beautiful new sandal in a consignment of donated clothing. Nearby, she spots the matching shoe on the foot of an unknown girl, who turns and walks away. A chance meeting the following day brings the two girls together and they decide to share and take turns wearing the sandals. This marks the beginning of a friendship between Lina and Feroza who exchange details of their lives and reveal the tragic circumstances which brought each of them to the camp. This picture book about refugee children tells a poignant story, but one of hope, too, in its subtle portrait of the fortifying bonds of sharing.
