This subtle and poignant novel challenges stereotypes and contemporary prejudice against asylum-seekers in its story of Nina, orphaned daughter of a middle-class family in Sareyevo, who escapes to England by hiding in one of the returning aid lorries. When she searches for her mother's English friend from before the war, she is faced with many unexpected discoveries about this 'safe haven' as well as a new perspective on her own family.
