Zlata is an eleven year old girl living in Sarejevo when war breaks out. Her diary documents in poignant detail the disintegration of a whole way of life she had taken for granted. Her childhood world is replaced by a desperate fight for survival until finally a chance to escape presents itself. Zlata's writing is lively, accessible, and full of wry humour, despite the gravity of the situation she describes.
