All the Way to Havana In this joyful tribute to the Cuban people's ingenuity and persistence, a young boy helps his father improvise repairs to their ancient car, so that the family may drive from their village home to Havana, to attend a party in celebration of the birth of a new cousin. Their trip is illustrated in double-page spreads which display the colourful profusion of vintage cars on the roads, all lovingly maintained and inventively held together. Close-ups of the family's faces in the packed interior of the car alternate with panoramic views of the countryside and the architectural splendours of the old city streets thronged with people and traffic. The text is threaded with onomatopoeic words in larger font which suggest a whole spectrum of mechanical noises - from the car's preliminary grumbles, to the comforting purr of a smooth running engine. The end-pieces provide a catalogue of car models from the 1950's as still seen on Cuba's roads.
