This novel follows 10 year old Elijah Breeze - nicknamed 'Jumper' -
through the events of one difficult summer when, after the death of his father, he and his mother move from the suburbs to live with his grandmother in Harlem. Jumper has to deal with establishing new friendships, made problematic by the all the differences of city life where - for example - baseball is all the rage, rather than his favourite game of basketball. This is a straightforward, accessible story, using lots of dialogue, touching on issues of bullying, bereavement, and the psychology of friendships between boys where emotions conflict with the ability to maintain a 'tough' veneer.
