This tale of a small quick-witted monkey escaping the jaws of a large, slow-thinking crocodile is taken from the Buddhist tradition of folklore known as the Jataka Tales which originated in India. When Monkey speaks of his desire to eat the mangoes that grow on an island in the middle of the river, Crocodile sees here an opportunity to capture the animal and feast on its heart - but is decisively outsmarted by his tricky opponent. The simple text is matched by the author's characteristic cut-paper collage and paint illustrations.
