Retold and illustrated by Joanna Troughton, this story originates amongst the Native American peoples of the South East, and portrays Rabbit as a trickster hero who brings fire to the earth. Rabbit devises a plan to steal fire from the Sky People, and fashions a special head-dress -ostensibly to teach them a new dance. He craftily sets light to his feathers and sets off down the mountain, helped by a relay of animals to preserve the fire for their own comfort.
