Ann Cameron has adapted the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano for a younger audience: it tells how the young African boy was kidnapped in 1755 and endured appalling conditions on a slave ship and beyond, and goes on to recount the subsequent struggle for freedom that made him famous. The 18th century style and formal language has been modernised and shortened, whilst preserving the direct voice and narrative pace of the original.
