Combining the powerful metre of a nursery rhyme with double-spread paintings and collages, this picture book composes a simple poem recalling the long march of progress towards the dream of equality: from images of segregation on buses, in restaurants and schools, to others of ordinary people inspired to non-violent protest, to scenes from the present-day where the most flagrant abuses identified by the civil rights movement have been overturned.
