A nameless slave girl flees in the night, guided by the moon and stars, heading north in the direction of freedom. Her poetic monologue describes the stages of the journey, marvellously conjuring up the rhythms of flight, running, heart-stopping moments of fear and hope. In this fitting companion to 'Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt', the double-spread illustrations mix sombre tones and vivid blues in a collage of emotional intensity; the deepest blue denoting the secret sign in the centre of the quilt.
