Africa is My Home: A Child of the Amistad The mutiny aboard the slave ship Amistad is seen through the eyes of a child in this fictionalised narrative based on the true story of Sarah Margru Kinson, a young West African girl sold to slave traders by an unscrupulous neighbour. On arrival in Cuba she is re-sold and taken aboard the Amistad, where she witnesses the violent uprising of fellow captives who seize control of the ship in the hope of sailing it back to Africa until they are intercepted and arrested. Margru describes her enforced stay in America and how it feels to be caught up in this celebrated case which involves a series of trials and the involvement of the Supreme Court.. Her first person narrative is interspersed with colour illustration and archive material rich in period detail. An author's afterword describes the research and use of documents which helped her recreate the young girl's perspective on this historic event.
