Ann Cameron has adapted the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano for a younger audience: it tells how the young African boy was kidnapped in 1755 and endured appalling conditions on a slave ship and beyond, and recounts the subsequent struggle for freedom and his rise to fame as England's most eloquent spokesman for the abolition of slavery. The eighteenth-century style and formal language has been modernised and shortened, whilst preserving the direct voice and narrative pace of the original.
