Oh, Freedom! Having written about, Iqbal, the Pakistani boy who became famous for his crusade against bonded labour, in this novel the author examines the struggle against slavery in the American South. Tommy, a 10 year old, living with his family on a plantation in Alabama in the mid 19th century, falls under the tutelage of a charismatic stranger arriving at their village: Peg Leg Joe, one of the Underground Railway's legendary guides or 'conductors'. Tommy's family, and a few others, respond to the newcomer's offer to help them escape to Canada and together they embark on an epic journey along a network of secret routes and safe houses, in which memorised songs play a crucial role in recalling directional clues. This is a fast-paced story, full of suspense and vivid incident, in which the young reader also learns about the injustices, racism and cruelties of this historical period and the immense courage of those who fought against the system and dedicated themselves to leading people to freedom.
